American ginseng dried roots

How long will whole dried American ginseng roots maintain their potency? What is the best way to decoct them or tincture when they are very hard and dry?

David said: If they are kept dry and away from light they can still be effective for decades. As for tincturing them, they need to be ground first. You can decoct them in a Chinese Ginseng cooker without grinding (low heat, for hours).
