Hello Rich, I was rereading your manuscript on Theobroma cacao and was hoping to find recommendations on tincturing. Do you tincture cacao? Can you advise me on ratio and precentage of alcohol?I want to add Theobroma to a respiratory formula as a tincture. I am also wondering if it would work as a glycerine for children. Your thoughts?

Rich said: I have never tinctured cacao! I have thought about it and may try it at some point. It has a high alkaloid content so my first guess at it would be a higher alcohol % - maybe 70% alcohol, though if I do it, I will probably do a few to compare and contrast small batches: 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%. My guess is the higher range will be best but I am not positive. But we don't make cacao tea (infusion), right? I don't think its medicine is very water soluble. For the same reason, I think a glycerite would be weak. Why not just use hot cocoa with high quality cacao for kids? Rich

Richard said:" "Hi Sandy, The short answer is that I don't know the answer to your question - it would be a state law so you could start with that. You can also use any alcohol - it doesn't have to be ethyl alcohol since it's not for internal use at all, so methyl alcohol for example if that ruffles fewer feathers. On a personal level, I would be very surprised if that was illegal, that seems very odd to me, especially with parents in attendance. But again I don't know that for a fact..." Rich
