Last night there was this question from Dana: Why is Dang Gui contraindicated with yin def? I know you mentioned inflammation but If it builds blood, I think of that as being somewhat related to replenishing yin (ie. moistening, nourishing). Can you elaborate? Wendy asked me to let you know that she double checked with Andrew and here is what he says: The answer requires a bit of convoluted theory. I think of this this as a soft contraindication. In general, herbs that move blood may also deplete blood. Think of blood movers as mobilizing stored blood, this depletes the reserves. If there is severe yin deficiency there are better choices. If the yin deficiency is mild, it can be used safely if it is combined in small amounts with larger amounts of nourishing yin tonics.
