David, As I was going through case study tea formulations, I noticed you using Lemon Verbena in a few of them, with your reasoning being "enhances sleep quality". I know we didn't study Lemon Verbena, but it sits right next to the dried Lemon Balm in my local herb store! Every time I see it, I just wonder about it. When might something like Lemon Verbena be used, and how are its qualities different than that of Lemon Balm? Jami

While both herbs have a lemony odor and taste (sort of), and are both are nervines and carminatives, they are not related. There are human clinical trials showing Lemon Verbena enhances sleep, but as far as I know none show it has antidepressant or antiviral activity like Lemon Balm.

David, The only thing I clarified from "Google" was that they are in entirely different families! Lots of articles including Lemon Balm, but pretty much on black hole on Lemon Verbena. Thank you! To follow up on my question, would you possibly use Lemon Verbena in lieu of Lemon Balm to enhance sleep quality in people where Lemon Balm is contraindicated? Is this where it comes in? Jami

You certainly could use it that way, although they each have some different uses, Lemon Verbena is also used for fevers, digestive upset, live fire headaches, etc
