Usnea Preparation

Hi David, I excitedly found some Usnea growing on some trees and am going to make a tincture. Would you ever consider boiling the Usnea to extract the Usnic acid first and then tincture it? I am very wary of lighting my house on fire by cooking it in alcohol first. But I am contemplating it. Thank you! Nina

Boiling it in water will not increase the solubility of Usnic acid, it is not water soluble. You might try moistening the Usnea with rice wine and then carefully stir frying the Usnea (be very careful alcohol flames can be almost invisible) till it is slightly dried out. Then tincture in high percentage ETOH
