In the intake, MB said that the reason she was not taking folate was because she believed herself to be an undermethylator (based on a low homocysteine blood level in the past?)She said that supplementing folate would "make her low serotonin symptoms worse." I briefly looked this concern up and found a functional medicine website that seems to be connected to William Walsh's work that echoes this concern. I would like to know if you agree with this and if this is something we should be aware of as herbalists who recommend supplementation? If yes, would it be necessary to have bloodwork to confirm that someone is undermethylating also with low serotonin before recommending that they stop folate supplementation?

I believe she said she was an overmethylator, not undermethylator which is why she is avoiding B-12 and folate. Under methylation would cause high homocysteine levels . It seems like there is a lack of clarity as what MB said - some people heard overmethylator, others undermethylator. Her symptoms fit the picture of an overmethylator more than an undermethylator.
