Someone who has been struggling with insufficient sleep (goes to sleep but wakes up between 1am-4am and can't go back to sleep) asked me my opinion about some alternative therapies to sleep as opposed to pharmaceutical sleep aids. It seems like hyper vigillance is a part of why they stay awake. I suggested that they try ashwaghanda for sleeping through the night, because that has helped me and some others I know, but in the absence of doing an intake on them, I'm wondering what sleep aid heavy hitters you have for sleeping through the night?

David said: As usual it depends on the person and and why they are waking. Is this person perimenopausal ? The type of insomnia you mention is common in perimenopausal and menopausal women (menopausal insomnia). For that I start with a combination of Hops, Passionflower and Motherwort. Other factors that can cause this include stress - , the Ashwagandha may help here, muscle tension (Skullcap), low blood sugar, sleep apnea or hypopnea, restless leg syndrome, periodic limb movement disorder, etc.
