After a hip replacement, a loved one’s doctor told her she needed to do prophylactic antibiotics before dental cleanings. She has had gastrointestinal issues since taking antibiotics for a bladder infection last summer followed by the joint replacement last fall, so she would rather not take them again. Do you have experience successfully using herbs in place of prophylactic antibiotics before dental work? I would imagine mouth rinses and internal tinctures could work, but I didn’t know if the risk is too high. Thank you!

David said: While someone could try taking herbs, there is no proof that taking them will be effective (or as effective) as taking prophylactic antibiotics to prevent prosthetic joint infection. This is a rare but possible result of dental work.
