Abortifacients: Can these be used for induction during pregnancy? If so, what are the recommended doses? as mentioned in class herbal abortifacients are not reliable and can be very dangerous, so no, not recommended
Adrenergic: Would you classify coffee and yerba mate under this category? not really, they have some overlap with adrenergic drugs but they act differently
Ama: When you discussed phlegm and ama, you mentioned that phlegm can lead to cancer. Could you elaborate on this idea? Andrew will probably discuss this in the TCM classes
Antinociceptive: You mentioned a formula with three herbs—Indian pipe, corydalis, and what was the third one? I couldn’t catch it clearly in the audio. Bai Zhi (Angelica dahurica)
Aperient: In what situations would you choose to use an aperient over a laxative? Would it be specifically for cases like intestinal blockage? No, for slow transit time
Cathartic: I studied Cascara sagrada under this classification. Would you consider this herb a cathartic, and is it included in the course’s materia medica? it is a laxative in normal doses, not a cathartic, and yes we study it
Fevers: From my experience, if a fever stems from a throat infection, even if you use a diaphoretic or antipyretic, you also need a herb for the throat infection. Otherwise, the fever won’t subside. Is that correct? there is no simple yes or not answer here, it depends on the case, but if you have strep throat with a fever just taking a diaphoretic will not be efective
