Hi! Last week Richard spoke about tobacco being tinctured and worked with in similar ways as lobelia..antispasmodic, etc. Curious if you have ever personally worked with it for folks and if so, which species? I grow both N. rustica and N. Sylvetris

Rich said: I absolutely did not talk about tincturing tobacco.  Do not do that!  There are at least two reasons I can think of why that would be something to completely avoid: one is toxicity and the other is addictiveness.  You can watch the recording to tease apart what I did say - that lobelia has an alkaloidal biochemistry (lobeline) similar to nicotine and some similar effects (tobacco for instance is well known to be dopaminergic and lobelia appears to be as well); and that lobelia (as tincture or other form) can be helpful to pull away from a tobacco addiction.

Ok. My apologies, I must have misunderstood when you were describing the alkaloidal biochemistry and its similar effects to infer that a tincture might have these qualities. I had been recently using lobelia tincture topically and I suppose in my mind had made this wild extrapolation that I could try a topical tobacco tincture. I had always understood tobacco leaf to have toxicity and knew about its possible support with tobacco addiction. You are right, you did not say that.
