I simply love medicinal weeds and Oenothera biennis is one of my favourites. We usually eat all parts of it, either leaves in “wild” salads, flowers as a snack when strolling through the garden and the roots steamed or sliced in a salad.
Sorry that this is going to be a several parts question since I am interested in learning a lot about this wonderful plant. If we´ll speak about evening primrose (all parts) in depth in the MM, I am certainly happy to wait.
I remember that you use evening primrose leaves for depression originating in the gut. Could you please share which parts you use (all above ground parts or exclusively the leaves), if only from the first year rosette or if also possible from the second year soon-to-flower or already flowering plant? Do you tincture it? If so, could you please share the plant-menstruum ratio and ETOH % (and if you use anything else like glycerin)? If using the fresh plant material does work, too, I would prefer that.
I was also wondering if you used the root, too? I just came across a study mentioning that they found not only antioxidant components but also ferric reducing components, so I was thinking of a possible use in hemochromatosis maybe?
However, from eating the roots I know that they contain a mucilage component like the leaves, and the roots can also be quite pungent, a bit like a radish, which gives me a tingling in the throat and often causes me to cough.
I´d be interested in hearing if you use the root medicinally, for which (disease) energetics and conditions, and in what type of preparation?
I wonder if the pungency/spicyness is important to keep in the medicine, which then probably would need to be prepared fresh?
Thank you.
