Someone I know who self-catheterizes is getting recurring UTIs about every 3 months or so. He is taking D-Mannose (Pure Encapsulations brand, 1 scoop BID) and drinks a couple ounces of unsweetened cranberry juice each morning when he takes his pills. When he's starting to get an infection, he can see the cloudiness in the cath tube and then will start to get a slight burning sensation. Would taking Pipsissewa as a simple help at the first signs of infection? He's 89 years old and about 155-160 lbs. I was thinking 3 squirts TID but wondering if this will be enough. Thank you!!

To clarify, I"m wondering about taking the Pipsessewa (or some other formula) only in the acute stage. When the infection resolves, he would go back to just the D-Mannose (if you agree). I should also mention that he is taking iodine to supposedly prevent these infections (at the recommendation of another herbalist -- 10 drops of Lugol's iodine in 1/3 cup of water 4x/day once per week). I don't think this is doing anything and is kindof scary to me. Thanks.

I cannot comment on the Lugols. I have not used it that way, but I would take the D-Mannose , Cranberry, etc for prevention and then at the very first sign of infection start the urinary antibacterials.
