As I'm reading some materia medica for my own study I see these terms used separately but I realize that I don't really understand the difference. I was reading Lisa Ganora's book titled "Herbal Constituents: Foundations in Phytochemistry." That title suggests to me that the terms are essentially, or at least almost, interchangeable. In other books they are discussed separately. For example: leaf constituents of nettle include indoles and flavonol glycosides, pharmacology includes flavonoids, minerals, vitamins, etc. It all looks similar to me, can you enlighten me? Thanks so much. Lindy

I am sorry I am not sure what you asking me. Which terms are used interchangeably ? Are you asking about Phytochemistry and Pharmacology ? Phytochemistry is the study of the chemistry of plants, Pharmacology is totally different it is the uses, effects and modes of actions of plants, drugs or phytochemicals. So this statement : includes flavonoids, minerals, vitamins, is totally incorrect, Pharmacology is the effects of the plant or individual substances, not the groups of chemicals.

That helps a lot, but one follow-up. Are phytochemistry and constituents used interchangeably; when someone talks about constituents are they always talking about the phytochemistry? I know these sound like kinda dumb questions, but chemistry is all new to me and I'm reading a lot to catch up on it. Thanks!

Yes, the phytochemicals are the plants constituents and the plants constituents are phytochemicals
